Girls soccer: Indians defeat Greeley, 2-0

First-half goals by Nicole Silenok and Lauren Hafkemeyer staked the John Jay girls soccer team to a 2-0 first-half lead, and the Indians’ defense made it hold up with its sixth shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over visiting Greeley on Friday night in Cross River.

The win improved John Jay’s record to 7-2-1.

The Indians, playing in front of a good-sized Homecoming crowd, came out with a lot of energy and took the play to Greeley early.

After consistent pressure, they went up 1-0 about 13 minutes into the game when Hannah Wear’s hard shot was deflected into the air by a defender and landed among a crowd of players in front of the goal, where it was eventually poked in by Silenok.

Seven minutes later, Zoe Boyd’s corner kick was headed in by Hafkemeyer to make it 2-0.

Greeley picked up its play in the second half but the John Jay defense kept the Quakers off the board, thanks to a great diving save by goalie Kelly Sposato midway through the half.

Sposato finished with eight saves, while Lindsey Kahan had seven saves in goal for Greeley (4-4).
