Girls soccer: John Jay wins league title

The John Jay girls soccer team celebrates its league title after last Friday's 1-0 win over Greeley.

The John Jay girls soccer team closed out the regular season last Friday with a 1-0 win over Greeley, clinching the Conference 3-A league title.

Zoe Boyd's goal from 30 yards out, off a Nicole Silenok assist, about 15 minutes into the first half proved to be the difference. The star of the game was goalie Kelly Sposato, who made 14 saves in what coach Paul Smith called one of the greatest performances by a keeper in his 24 years as head coach.

It was the Indians' ninth shutout in 14 games. The team has allowed only seven goals all season — the fewest ever by a John Jay team in the regular season, said Smith.
John Jay finished the regular season at 9-4-2, and were 7-2-2 in league play, which included results from games against league opponents (Somers, Fox Lane and Greeley) plus five crossover games.

Somers, which lost to Fox Lane last Tuesday, 2-0, finished at 8-3 in the league. The Indians won the title by having a better winning percentage (78%) than Somers (73%).

The section playoffs are scheduled to begin on Saturday.
